Balanced Health Chiropractic: New Changes for a New Year

Welcome 2014!

At Balanced Health our growth has resulted in a few changes, including a remodel on our current office in Midvale. To better serve our patients and clients we are going to focus exclusively on chiropractic care and are currently discontinuing our massage therapy service.Although we’re a little sad about this change, we believe our customers will be better served by these new changes.

Stay tuned for more information about changes in our chiropractic care, including a new membership plan.

Food Blog

We love us some food. Lot’s of it. And preferably homemade. Which is why we are loving this food blog, Mel’s Kitchen Cafe. Everything we’ve made from the site has been delicious, healthy-ish (OK, the brownies weren’t very healthy, but they were homemade, and that’s got to count for something, right?!?), and a homerun with the family. That’s probably our favorite part, all of the recipes are tested on her five children and husband, and she let’s you know how popular they were with the fam-dam.

Our latest favorite was the recipe for banana bread: http://www.melskitchencafe.com/2008/03/buttermilk-banana-bread.html. Delicious!

Friday: 8am – 9pm
Saturday: 8am – 2pm
(Pre-Sale Thursday: 7pm -8:30pm)

Sandy, UT 84094

If you’re wondering how to get the best bang for the buck for your shop, check out our top ten reasons to shop the Hilltop Methodist Children’s and Maternity Consignment Sale:

1. It’s Clean and Organized: You know how garage sales, are, well, not the cleanest way to buy goods? And you’re usually shopping from a big pile of mish-mash clothes? Not here my friend! Everything is organized! For real. Not just by size, but my gender, type, and beyond. There’s a room for toys! There’s a room for baby stuff! There’s a room for shoes!

2. A Pre-Sale: If you’re like us and depend on the sale to clothe your little ones, this is a serious sale. And all serious sale-goers go to the pre-sale on Thursday night. To get your ticket for the pre-sale you’ll need to sign up for a three-hour volunteer shift. Which brings us to our next point…

3. Meet Friends: Volunteering is a great way to meet friends! Nothing bonds new friendships like hanging up baby clothes!

4. Killer Prices: This is the best way to score children’s and maternity clothes for cheap! Think garage-sale like prices minus the blazing sun.

5. Quality: The Hilltop ladies insist on quality, meaning everything that consigners put up for sale needs to be clean and in working order.

6. Seasonal: One of our favorite parts of the sale is that they have it twice a year: once in the spring, and once in the fall. Because of that you don’t have to sift through swimsuits when all you want is Halloween costumes.

7.  Speedy Checkout: Although the lines may be long sometimes, they have this checkout process down to a science so the line moves fast. Every checkout lane has two workers which not only speeds up the process but ensures accuracy.

8. Even Friendlier: The ladies behind the United Methodist Women group are a great, friendly bunch. Everyone is kind and works to make this a bi-annual success.

9. No Strollers on Thursday/Friday AM: Thanks to a strict no-stroller rule during the busiest times, you’re always able to move about the building and get to those hot deals.

10: Charity: Of course! Proceeds from the sale go to support the UMW and a host of local charities. Never has shopping felt so good and been so useful.

So there you have it! Get your consignment sale on and make your way to Sandy this September!

Chiropractors and Auto Accidents

If you’ve ever been in a car accident you know that it hurts, a lot. Especially after a few days. Although some may think that low speed accidents won’t cause injury, unfortunately that is not always the case. If you’ve been involved in any sort of auto accident it’s best to get checked out by a chiropractor for whiplash or other non-symptomatic conditions, which if left untreated can lead to arthritis, disc generation, and more permanent damage.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash occurs when the head and neck are napped back and forth very quickly. Symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Headaches
  • Numbness
  • Back & Neck Pain
  • Dizziness
  • Ear Ringing
  • Hearing Loss

Why Chiropractic for Whiplash?

Chiropractic is an effective treatment for whiplash

because it doesn’t use prescription pain medication. Chiropractic focuses on the misalignments of the spine that result from auto accidents.Balanced Health Chiropractic will diagnose any whiplash or other auto accident related injuries and prescribe a treatment plan that will have you feeling better.

What Does It Cost?

Luckily Utah is a “No Fault State” which means that your auto insurance company can be billed for any of your chiropractic care related to your auto accident. Find out more about billing your insurance after an auto accident by clicking here.

More Oatmeal Recipes: Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Muffins

Isn’t it a great time of year to eat anything oatmeal? Especially when paired with chocolate? You’re right, there isn’t really a bad time of year for oatmeal and chocolate.

We made these over the weekend, and it’s a good thing we had the foresight to double then right off the bat or they would have been gone as soon as they were cooled.

We made then according to the recipe with the exception of using dark chocolate chips, which were a delight by the way if you’re into that sort of thing (which we are by the way). Enjoy.

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Muffins

makes 12 muffins

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour (or all-purpose)
1 cup rolled oats
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup butter, at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup milk (any kind will do)
1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350.

Add oats to a bowl and add 1/2 cup of milk. Let soak for 5-10 minutes, while you prepare the first few steps of the muffins.

In a large bowl, combine egg and brown sugar and whisk until smooth and caramel in color. Add in vanilla and butter, whisking well. Try to smooth the batter as much as possible – there still may be some small butter chunks. Add flour, oat mixture, baking soda, salt and cinnamon and mix. Add remaining milk and combine until smooth. Fold in chocolate chips.

Line a muffin tin with lines and pour about 1/4 cup batter into each line. Sprinkle the tops with  sugar. Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until cooked through.

Oatmeal Cake Recipe: Fall Favorites

Image

A really good cake. It could even be labeled “hard to resist”.

Something about fall makes us want to cook. And not just anything, but warm, comforting foods. The foods that were too hot to cook in the summer. One of our family favorites is Oatmeal Cake. It’s incredibly moist, slightly sweet, and is kind of a unique to bring to a family gathering. And don’t skip the topping step. It’s like frosting, except for better. Trust us.

And without further ado, our favorite recipe for Oatmeal Cake.

Oatmeal Cake

1 1/2 c. boiling water

1 c. quick oats

1/2 c. shortening

1 c. sugar

1 c. brown sugar

2 eggs

1 1/2 c. flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. salt

Topping:

1/2 c. melter butter

1/4 c. evaporated milk

1/2 c. brown sugar

1 1/2 c quick oats

1 tsp. vanilla

Pour boiling water over oats and let stand for 15 minutes. Cream shortening and sugars together. Add eggs. Mix in dry ingredients. Add oats last. Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan. Bake at 375 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

For the topping, mix all ingredients, spread on cake, and put under boiler until browned lightly.

Hilltop Methodist Church Consignment Sale

It’s that time of year again! Time to get our shop on at the semi-annual Hilltop UMW Consignment Sale. Now we’ve shopped our fair share of consignment sales here in Utah, and this has got to be our favorite. It’s clean, extremely well organized, and sure beats garage sale-ing to find good deals. We love the fall sale because it’s a great time to snag early Christmas presents for the young ‘uns. All of the specs are below.

What: Hilltop UMW Children’s and Maternity Sale
When: September 28 & 29, 2012; Friday: 9am – 8pm; Saturday: 8am – 2pm
Where: The Hilltop United Methodist Church
985 East 10600 South
Sandy, UT 84094
Why: It’s the best way to clothe your children and pregnant belly. Not to mention a great and cheap way to snag toys and books. Seriously. It’s the best.

Tips:
If it’s your first year, there are a few things you should know:

1. Take a large bag and/or a laundry basket to haul your goods. There is no way you’ll be able to hold it all. Trust us.
2. Bring cash or your checkbook.
3. Pack a snack. They have an efficient checkout method, but if you come during peak times, you may find yourself in line for a while.
4. Bring a friend. It’s a lot easier when you have a pal to help you decide what should stay or go.

If you’ve been before, do you have any tips?
